I think yesterday's upholstery class has been my favorite thus far. I finally felt like we were making some progress!
Obviously we've made progress since February and I clearly recall my anxiety about being able to build up a chair that had chunks of wood just falling off, but yesterday - yesterday was different.
We are just about ready to put on the absolute last piece of fabric. This is huge. The arms are done - and looking beautiful, I might add - and the back is all we've got left.
Ok, and then there's the cording to finish things up but I'm about 99% sure we will be done next week! With one class to spare! Remember when I wasn't quite sure we'd even finish by the end of the semester!?
So here's the breakdown of our work this week:
We needed to finish up the arms - we ended last week tacking down the muslin and just needed to add a final layer of cotton before we put down the fabric. For the most part, it was an easy process but then we introduced my new best friend: Ply Grip.
Looks scary. Works miracles and avoids any hand sewing you might otherwise have to do.
You basically just tuck the edge of the fabric into the little teeth to create a nice, straight, finished edge, and voila!
We then got started on the back. I made some quick cording to make a more decorative edge around the back piece of fabric and then we attached the ply grip right along the edge of the cording.
All you need to do is staple the non-sharp edge flat against the seam on the cording and the back piece of our fabric will tuck nicely into those teeth and you can just hammer it down.
Muslin: Done.
Next up: a layer of cotton and the back piece of fabric. Then just a little trim all the way along the bottom of the chair.
She'll be good as new when we bring her home!
