My mom and I signed up to take an upholstery class this semester and yesterday was supposed to be our first class. Sadly, it was canceled because of the snow. What a disappointment!
But, what better way to spend a snow day than working on my upholstery project in progress? Milwaukee shut down for the day and I was lucky enough to be stuck inside with Michael and my tattered two calling out for some TLC.
So, after we figured out how to tackle this:
(which my back and shoulders are REALLY feeling today), we got to work on the chairs.
So much for a day of rest and relaxation, huh? Michael was a trooper for spending the day working with me; I’m pretty sure he was hoping to spend it on the couch with a bag of Cheetos.
I, on the other hand, was giddy over having an unexpected day to devote to these chairs. I think it’s a mild case of self-diagnosed obsessive compulsive disorder, which I actually find to be very useful and used it to my advantage yesterday. I'm also pretty sure it's genetic. My brother recently moved back in with my mom and hasn't stopped sanding and staining staircases throughout her house. Once we start on a project, we McElwee's don't know how to stop.
So, Michael sanded down the wood on chair number one, with Brian as his right-hand man (which is funny because Michael is left-handed . . .), and officially decided he wants to stain, not paint. I conceded. The wood is in good condition and I do love a good, dark stained wood.
I stripped down chair number two. . . almost. She needs some remaining nails and staples removed. The second chair’s fabric was much easier to remove since I won’t need to use it as a pattern – I have the first chair’s fabric for that. I was able to remove the fabric a bit more recklessly this time, decreasing the amount of time I had to spend on this one pretty significantly.
Next on our radar is stain and fabric. I'm eyeing up some pretty neat Anna Maria Horner and Amy Butler fabrics. I love this Premier Prints fabric as well, but I'm pretty sure Michael isn't digging my thing for yellow these days and the likelihood that he'd approve a bird fabric is, well, basically nonexistent.
Total Time Spent: 8 hours
